Orbis Pictus Award Winners and Honor Books often shed light on historical events or figures that are not regularly discussed, but a child should be knowledgeable about. For example, the 2002 Award Winning book, Black Potatoes, tells about the everyday lives of the Irish during the Great Irish Potatoe Famine, which is not a standard topic taught in schools. Another example of this is Hurry Freedom, which provides the reader a look into the lives of African Americans who lived in California During the Gold Rush. Therefore, if a person or event is not thoroughly covered in a typical history lesson is a good indication that the book is award or honor material. The Award also favors oppression. In nearly all winners and honor books there is an opression that is needed to be overcomed. an oppression is present in multiple ways but primarly focuses on obtaining a specific goal. In books like Christmas in The Quarters, Christmas in the big house, the opression is them being slaves but still have a goal of having a successful christmas. In biographical books, opression is still cleary present as in Martin Luther King overcoming black oppression to have a goal of having equal rights. The illustrations on the books are more realistic. For example Helen Keller: her life in picture book is a book that shows only black and white real pictures the same goes for Amalia Eahart. On the other hand books like How Many Baby Pandas and Spiders are also real pictires, but their filled with color The vocabulary used is more in depth and sometimes less accessible for very young readers. THey like to cover the entire spectrum of readers pre-literate to the advanced (up to about sixth grade.) -Monica H. A popular topic is an opresased people overcoming adversity. MLK, Hurry Freedom, Potato,[andrew] Books offer insight into what caused the problem and then how it was adressed. Famine and Great fire, Informative books - All of books monica read. illustrations are more realistic - carolina We should all start adding pictures to our books no later than Wed May 26 *** Please check books for an index or anything that makes it more like a textbook*** -when adding a picture simply click on the icon that looks like a tree from the toolbar above.
